The OLD Philosopher – John M. Miller
I have not written an essay for at least a couple of weeks, which is unusual for someone as motivated as I continually to thrust my opinions upon defenseless souls such as yourself. But I have decided to take a furlough from essay-writing for a while, and I want to tell you why.
A couple of days ago I began an essay entitled The Doldrums of the Democrats and the Reconstruction of the Republicans. I got only half way through it and gave up. I decided the Democrats are probably feeling pretty frisky and the Republicans have no intention of reconstructing their party, and therefore things are quite grim all around. Everything is still so “up in the air” regarding the election that it is impossible to write about anything with any conviction over what might or should come to pass.
In other words, I am very discouraged about what Trump will do before, on, and after Jan. 20, and therefore I am discouraged about what Joe Biden and Congress will be able to do because of Mr. Trump’s relentless obstructionism. Should both Democratic candidates for the US Senate win in Georgia on Jan. 5, things would look up considerably, but still no one can honestly have any idea of what would transpire after that. That is because of the always-unpredictable and irascible Donald J. Trump.
So, not being certain about anything that is likely to occur over the next few months, and finding everything that is currently happening too dismaying, and feeling it is therefore a waste of your time and mine for me to write anything about anything worth reading about, I am going to cool my scribal jets for a while. I could write about matters other than politics or Covid-19, but present circumstances in the US of A have left me too disgruntled even to do that. However, I have no doubt that innumerable other pundits and/or prophets will be available to you.
Truly I am very bummed-out. I haven’t been this depressed in the past twenty-five years. I have no doubt that for me to refrain from inflicting my always-subjective views on you will not depress you in the least. Nevertheless, I wanted to alert you to the likelihood you shall not receive any essays from me until sometime after Jan. 20, 2021. Please try not to go into an unhealthy swoon yourself such as that which has silenced me.
Sincerely,
The Suddenly-Much-Older OLD Philosopher
