In life we are occasionally, or perhaps frequently, faced with situations where we do not know what is the right thing to do. We might know what we want to do, but is it right? Today we shall continue to examine a situation like that which is explained in Paul’s letter to his friend Philemon. In our uncertainties, we can be certain of God’s presence with us as we seek to make correct decisions. We determine the decision, but God assists us in it by His presence with us. Therefore let us, with confidence, worship God.
Pastoral Prayer
We thank Thee, Creator God, for having made the ever-expanding universe, and for fashioning laws of nature which enable the created order to nurture life on many planets and in many forms. Help us to do all we can to maintain the life forms which now exist on our planet. Prevent us from forgetting that we are the primary stewards of earthly creation, and that we are Thy servants in that process, and not our own masters. We particularly ask Thy blessing to be with scientists, naturalists, and environmentalists who daily strive to preserve the world as it now exists, and who attempt to thwart human decisions and actions which erode the sustainability of life on the earth.
We marvel at Thy presence with us in all the circumstances of our lives. When we are well, we bless Thee for our health. When we are ill, we sense Thy healing touch, and we are given hope and strength. When we are afraid, Thy spirit calms our troubled spirits, and we are able to face whatever frightens us. When natural disasters strike, we wonder whether we individually or the world around us will ever again encounter safety and solidarity, but in time the world becomes again as it once was, and we realize it is by Thy grace that the landscape once more reflects the reality of the world as a fertile and favorable place. Praise be to Thee for always being with us, O God, even when we feel most cut off from Thy presence.
We ask Thee to make Thyself known to those who feel far removed from Thee because of illness, the death of loved ones, misfortune, continuous pain, constant adversity, or relentless inner anxiety. May the light which shone through the life of Jesus Christ shine again in the hearts and minds of those who believe themselves to be lost and alone in life. And in seeing the light of Jesus in their lives, may those who believe they live in darkness therefore see Thy light in their pilgrimage in this world. These things we ask in Jesus’ name. Now we join in prayer as Jesus taught his initial disciples, saying together, Our Father….
